Mapping for Indigenous Environmental Justice
SPEAKER: Ryan E. Emanuel, Associate Professor of Hydrology, Duke University
DESCRIPTION: Despite centuries of settler colonialism, Indigenous Peoples still occupy parts of their ancestral homelands among forested swamps, sandy plains, and blackwater streams of what is now the US state of North Carolina. Amid these backwaters, Lumbee and other Indigenous communities have adapted to a radically transformed world while preserving their cultures and connections to place. In recent decades, pollution, unsustainable development, and climate change have quickened the transformation of Indigenous homelands and threaten Indigenous lifeways. In this talk I highlight some of the ways in which mapping, geospatial analysis, and other tools have factored into research and public engagement aimed at identifying and addressing these issues in North Carolina. I draw from my book, On the Swamp: Fighting for Indigenous Environmental Justice, written from my perspective as a Lumbee environmental scientist, to share stories and broader lessons about environmental justice and Indigenous rights in the 21st century.
Transforming Historical Maps with Computer Vision, VR/AR, & AI
