Beyond User-Generated Maps – Where Crowd Intelligence Meets Artificial Intelligence
SPEAKER: Alexander Zipf, Professor and Chair of GIScience, Heidelberg University
DESCRIPTION: User-generated maps, particularly OpenStreetMap (OSM), have been an unexpected success story over the years, becoming the de facto standard in many regions and for many use cases. However, OSM’s data quality remains heterogeneous globally, and initiatives like “Missing Maps” are still crucial. The rapid advancements in AI are increasingly challenging OSM’s model of human-generated geoinformation production. Both approaches – human and AI – offer distinct advantages and limitations. A key question is how these two can coexist or be effectively integrated into a human-in-the-loop, Crowd-AI-supported workflow that is open, ethical, and responsible. This talk will explore selected examples and use cases to address those challenges.
From Data to Discovery: Open Maps, Open Minds, and Endless Possibilities
SPEAKER: Amy Rose, Technical Director, Overture Maps Foundation
DESCRIPTION: Discover how open geospatial data is unlocking new frontiers in innovation, collaboration, and accessibility. Amy Rose shares how initiatives like the Overture Maps Foundation are transforming mapping into a shared digital infrastructure—empowering developers, governments, and communities to build smarter, more inclusive solutions.
