Guided Giant Map Presentations

Two Giant Floor Map (8 x 11 metres)Tours with Canadian Geographic (CanGeo)/Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) cartographer, Chris Brackley

Behind the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada Giant Floor Map
Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada

Created in partnership with Canada’s national Indigenous organizations, the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada shares the histories, perspectives, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the map explores themes such as language, treaties, residential schools, and cultural knowledge—blending census data with Indigenous Knowledges.

Join Canadian Geographic cartographer Chris Brackley in the Exhibition Hall for a guided tour of the Giant Floor Map (8 x 11m), a groundbreaking piece that redefined cartography at CanGeo/RCGS. By removing non-Indigenous content, the map centers Indigenous relationships to land and introduces new mapping techniques that have influenced all of Brackley’s work since. This session includes an introduction to the map’s creation and an interactive walk-through with opportunities for discussion.

Behind the Biinaagami Giant Floor Map
Biinaagami: Our shared responsibility to the Great Lakes

The Biinaagami Giant Floor Map is the centerpiece of a project that gives voice to the waters of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Watershed through Indigenous Knowledges, cartography, and augmented reality. Visitors can follow the path of an Anishinaabe Water Walker, explore bathymetry and flowlines, learn about the languages of the region, and see the full network of waterways and the First Nations they pass through.

Join Canadian Geographic cartographer Chris Brackley in the Exhibition Hall for a guided tour of this 8 x 11m map. Rooted in two-eyed seeing—blending Indigenous and Western ways of knowing—Biinaagami was developed through years of collaboration and community feedback. Chris will share the story behind the map’s creation and design, followed by an interactive walk-through. Participants can also explore augmented reality stories embedded throughout the map—just bring your phone or tablet.
